Wool Paintings....

Freckles and I finally got to use this fun gift we received from our friend Susan for Christmas. It was so fun, we couldn't stop at just one. This is from a kit by Artterro. Freckles got a hang of it really quick, thankfully it is a very forgiving craft to work with.... It doesn't really matter if you messed up. She & I both did an owlets picture since we have been deep in owl studies since she has watched the movie Legend of The Guardians and reading the series by Kathryn Lasky...Heads up to all my Home School pals or owl lovers...We found this awesome live cam where you can view 3 different owl families who have just laid their eggs and are about to hatch this coming February.
Keep an eye out for these baby owlets
 Here and Here
We have visually witnessed mating, feeding, cleaning, sleeping, horking their owl pellets and laying the eggs for the last couple weeks. Our favorite owl family is the first link with Sydney & Mel.
This is their first time having a clutch. Hope you will find some interest in it as we have. freckles will be doing a report about it once the babies come!

So the first two projects were done by me.
As the next two are Freckles wool paintings...
She did a great job too!

Flying Hoot Owl by Freckles 2011

I will be turning the hearts into little pins...
The first heart is for my dear Freckles to wear for Valentines Day.
The last set of tiny hears are still in the works but will be made for my shop.
They are small yet sweet sentiments.
I definitely recommend this craft project...
May you all have a wonderful weekend!!!!

Mud Pies....

Your never to old to play in the mud...especially with your kids. Both my kids have enjoyed mud playing through out their childhood. Even I played in mud as a child...making pies. I always enjoyed playing outdoors with my animals out in the dirt or mud in my secret hideout which was an old barn in our backyard...
Some of my memorable moments were when we lived on
that tiny plot of land with the chickens, horses, rabbits, cats and dogs. After finding this book, Mud Pies and Other Recipes... I found myself giddy with excitement. To dig in the mud and pick goodies from around the yard with my little girl brings me back to my own childhood.

We gathered a bunch of kitchen stuff and her old tea sets
and put together a mud kitchen in our backyard. We invited our honored guest,
Mary Quite Contrary to a delightful feast, rose tea and mud pie of course!

Her mud kitchen was stocked  and ready to cook and create.
We went through the entire yard and picked leaves, grass, berries,
tangerines, roses, small flowers, succulents and more to make
Mary Quite Contrary the meal of her life. It was so much fun putting
it all together and shopping in our own backyard.

We found the perfect leaves and
flowers for a light salad to add to the salad bar.

We filled a jar of dandelions and succulent cacti
 that looked like green beans

Pebbles & seeds
 became beans.

We mixed the salad with some white
rose pedals which gave it appeal.

Twigs became noodles...
perfect for spaghetti.

A bean soup simmered in the sun while
Freckles prepared her Mousse mud pie for dessert.

The perfect mousse mud pie ever!

Freckles put it in the oven to bake while she
went on to make the backyard stew.
We used a vintage bread box as the oven...cleaver huh?

As Freckles prepared her backyard stew,
I got the rose tea ready for Mary Quite Contrary.

Mary Quite Contrary enjoyed her tea with a light salad and soup
along with some other appetizers we made while we
waited for the backyard stew to cook.

She nibbled on escargot..Not my favorite,
 but she liked it anyway.

Stuffed shells...
delish!

Extra salad leaves and croutons...
In case she wanted more salad of course.

A little fruit!

And don't forget some chips and dip.

Missy test tasted the
 backyard stew.

Nibbled at the beef.  She test
 tasted and approved!

And got a bit of mud in her face...Funny girl!

Freckles added the last of the veggies to
her stew and served her guest.

After the dinner course, Mary Quite Contrary
was quite anxious to have her Mousse Mud Pie.
Freckles cut her the perfect piece...
And she enjoyed every bite!

We had a good few hours of fun outside...
Thankfully it was still warm enough to play out there all day.
I felt like a kid again. And, enjoyed this special moment with my daughter playing.
You are never to old to play!
So weather your 1 or 100 this sweet childrens book for dolls
and their Mama's is adorable and will surely spark some
imagination for any outdoor tea or dinner.
Can't wait to go out and play with my girl again &
make some more recipes from the mud pie book!

Joyfully At Home & Orange Brownies.....

The night before our fieldtrip to the Citrus Park I made up this simple batch of orange flavored brownies using a recipe by Paula Dean. The morning of our trip we had the delightful little cake like brownie or shall I say Orangie...with a glass of orange juice and a maderine cutie to start off our morning.

I ponder many times what a blessing it is to be home really, I am joyfully home...schooling my children and being able to share with them everyday, their milestones. It truly has flashed before our eyes...My son was in public school for the first two years of his schooling, in which I regret, yet must have faith that it was for a purpose for that given season. We had always wanted to school at home but didn't have the guidence or go about at the time. We finally decided we would just do it...I was a stay at home mama anyway...surely it was my calling to teach our children at home. Why in the world would I want some stranger teaching him. Let alone steal the time I should be with him. Freckles was just a wee baby at the time...Which worked out just fine. Homeschooling turned out to be the right fit for our family in which we have swore to homeschool all the way. My son is already going to be graduating next year and off to college. I can't believe how quickly time has slipped. I feel so blessed to share my days with them through each moment...Even the days where I fail...I wouldn't trade it for the world, even our son says the same. Staying home caring for my family, loving, praying, cooking, cleaning, & teaching has fulfilled me, which may be hard for some people to understand or swallow. Homemaking & homeschooling has been the most rewarding part of my life thus far. I may not get paid with dollar bills but really I do...I get paid every day with the warmth, the hugs, the kisses, the moments treasured, the giggles, the talks, the joy they bring is like sunshine to what may seem to be dark days....even the tears. That my dear friends is far more precious than silver, gold or rubies combined. I have a job... a job that was ordained to me a job that surely is not complete. This is the job I love...
a job of being joyfully at home.

Well these are just my thoughts anyway.
I didn't forget to leave you the
recipe for the orange brownies here.
Enjoy!!
Thanks for listening! (reading)

Citrus Historical Park

The kids and I went on a field trip to a Citrus Historical Park this weekend, hence we are studying citrus for a home school project during the fruits season. I am a home schooling Mama who loves to make themed projects.....so, this week I will be sharing what we did for our study.

This park preserves some of the rapidly vanishing cultural landscape of the citrus industry
and to tell the story of this industry's role in the history and development of California.
The park recaptures the time when "Citrus was King" in California, recognizing the importance
of the citrus industry in southern California. In the early 1900s, an effort to promote citrus ranching in the state brought hundreds of would-be citrus barons to California for the "second Gold Rush." The lush groves of oranges, lemons and grapefruit gave California another legacy - its lingering image as the Golden State - the land of sunshine and opportunity. The design of the park is reminiscent of a 1900s city park, complete with an activity center, interpretive structure, amphitheater, picnic area, and demonstration groves. The land contained within the park still continues to produce high-quality fruits.

Citrus was known in ancient times through ancient cultures of Greeks and later Romans as the sweet orange later appeared in the 1400's around the time of Christopher Columbus who probably even brought the fruit over to America...Years of growth throughout occurred then finally reaching California in the mid 1800's which they called the second Gold Rush! There was more information throughout the museum itself and would probably belabor the point if I wrote it all in.... I will spare you.

Did you know there are over 100 different types of citrus? Wow! The kids and I thought it was interesting to say the least. We had a sweet guide named Roy who gave us all sorts of information on the history. he was a sweet man to take his time to share with us that day.

The museum itself was very nicely displayed and very informative. It really is neat that they wish to preserve this history as well as the orange groves for our children's future and their children for that matter. In case you didn't know by now...We love history anyway...I even learned a lot since I honestly didn't know the history of citrus to begin with.

We had to get a picture of Roy too! Thanks Roy...you were a great guide. At the end of our tour we browsed the little gift shop full of cute things and lot's of items with a citrus themes. We also got to test taste several different oranges, mandarins and some hybrids which college students grafted and made a whole new citrus. i forgot what they were called...It was sweet and juicy though!

We then roamed around and walked a little trail took some pictures of some citrus and this weird citrus in the picture above...It's called a citron...It is a citrus but nothing like the citrus we all know...this had no juicy innards and the shape was quite freaky. Roy told us they are also called some sort of fingers...ewwww!

Okay so this is where the theme comes in...We brought some citrus items and sweets we got from the gift shop and enjoyed them in the park. I lay out a quilt as we feasted on the goodies. Sugar rush! We brought along some cuties and homemade orange brownies which I will share the recipe this week!

I grew up with Lemonheads and Sunkist Gems candies but never saw Orangeheads before. It must be new. Maestro actually said he likes the Lemonheads better. I felt like a kid again...testing all the candies was fun!

I brought along our nature notebooks and supplies to sketch while we hung out in the park. It was a fun time just sitting under a tree lounging on a quilt listening to the birds singing and chatting with my kids. We each did our own picture of oranges...

Though freckles drawing looked more like kumquats...
it was adorable. It made me giggle!

Maestro is more musical than he draws...which was actually nice to see him join in.
I thought his picture turned out nice.

I just did a leaf rubbing of an orange tree and colored in a sphere...

We then went on a little adventure through the orange groves. I thought it was a bit spooky and cold in there though. i'm glad my kids were with me. I certainly wouldn't roam in an orange grove alone.

Then before we left I took some fun pictures of my kids. They are such goofballs. Look at my son in the picture above...he was all serious (serious geekiness)... Freckles couldn't stop giggling at him and his pose. Oh well, we got a good laugh out of it anyway.

I love my little goofballs!
It was a fun day spent with them...It was entertaining and educational!
Now go have yourself an orange!
Because they are good for you and filled with vitamin C
which helps fight against illness and diseases!
That will surely make you smile!
